Host Response to Infection

Advancing Medicine with Actionable Diagnostics

Decoding the Host Response to Infection Requires Comprehensive, Accessible Solutions

Infection can sometimes present as a medical mystery, leaving clinicians with diagnostic uncertainty—unable to identify an etiology even in the presence of a clear clinical manifestation. Unraveling the complexities of infection requires the right combination of clinical biomarkers for deeper understanding of the patient condition.

What Constitutes an Infection?

It requires a pathogen, a susceptible host, and the manifestation of clinical disease.
Pathogen
0
A pathogen is introduced

and multiplies within the host.
Host
0
The host’s immune system
reacts to the pathogen.
Clinical Disease
0
Symptoms of clinical
disease manifest.

The host immune response to infection provides powerful information—and we’re listening

Building upon our strong history of biomarker innovation, we are transforming the diagnostic landscape to improve understanding of the host response to infection and overall patient health.

We are leading the way with novel clinical biomarkers and a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary portfolio—rethinking diagnostics to provide actionable insights into patient care.

“Infections can be difficult to distinguish—complicating treatment decisions and leading to antibiotic misuse. That's why we're developing solutions to decode the host response to infection, enhancing clinical confidence and diagnostic efficiency.”

Advancing Diagnostic Biomarkers

We are delivering advanced diagnostic biomarkers & solutions to empower
clinicians to make faster, more informed decisions and determine the right treatment for their patients.

Leveraging Established, Novel, and Emerging Biomarkers

We are committed to identifying biomarker combinations that aid in the assessment of the
host immune response.

Established Markers

White Blood Cell (WBC)

WBC levels rise during infection, among other medical conditions.

Procalcitonin (PCT)

PCT levels rise in the presence of a bacterial infection, and the levels are correlated with the severity of the infection.

C-Reactive Protein (CRP)

CRP levels tend to rise during inflammation or infection and fall during recovery, suggesting levels could be used to monitor infection and treatment.

Novel Markers

Monocyte Distribution Width (MDW)

MDW is a risk stratification tool that works as part of your ED’s existing CBC-Diff workflow to measure the risk of having sepsis or of developing sepsis within the next 12 hours.

Emerging Inflammatory Markers

Ferritin

Ferritin is a marker of inflammation in the body. As such, ferritin levels tend to rise when there is an underlying condition that can cause inflammation—such as infection.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6)

IL-6 is predominantly considered to be a pro-inflammatory cytokine, produced wherever there is inflammation—including during infection—but it has also been shown to play an anti-inflammatory role.

Powering the Testing You Need, Where
You Need It

Is it bacterial or viral? Make faster, more informed decisions with rapid, accurate host response information to differentiate
bacterial and viral infections and lower the chance of inappropriate patient management & antibiotic misuse.
