At Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. From advancing medical science to improving human health, our dedication extends beyond our products to our impact on the planet. As one of the world’s largest diagnostic manufacturers, the steps we take toward sustainability can create meaningful change on a global scale.
Beckman Coulter’s Long-Standing Commitment to Emission Reduction
For over a decade, responsibly managing the energy footprint of our operations has been one of our core values. Supporting human health goes hand in hand with protecting our environment, which is why emission reduction isn’t just a one-time project for us - it’s a philosophy that guides our growth and operations. Since 2014, we’ve been focused on cutting greenhouse gas emissions by optimizing manufacturing, upgrading our facilities, and investing in renewable energy like solar power.
Partnering with Danaher to Lead Sustainability in Diagnostics
After joining Danaher, Beckman Coulter has supported Danaher’s enterprise-wide emission reduction targets and is working to ensure emission reduction continues to be a core part of growing and sustaining our business and customer base. We’re actively working to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from our sites and vehicle fleets by 50.4%1 by 2032 and are committed to achieving net-zero value chain emissions by 2050.
Danaher’s strategy focuses on four key areas: energy efficiency at our sites, developing on-site generation of renewable energy, purchasing green electricity, and optimizing fleet operations. Our focus is on projects that offer long-term benefits and sustainable energy reduction.
How Beckman Coulter is Leading the Way
1. Investing in Renewable Energy
We’re spearheading solar energy projects at key locations worldwide, including Suzhou, China, and Mishima, Japan. These award-winning initiatives have been phased to reduce emissions, with our Suzhou facility already entering its second stage of solar development. Meanwhile, our Mishima site was recognized by Danaher as the 2023 Most Sustainable Site for their exceptional sustainability performance. In addition to these efforts, we’re purchasing green energy from solar, wind, and hydro sources across all our sites.
2. Comprehensive Site Energy and GHG Assessments & Footprint Optimization
Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in the regular energy assessments of our sites, ensuring that we’re always looking for new ways to reduce emissions both now and in the future. These audits help us create customized, site-specific plans, supported by dashboards to track our progress.
We take a holistic view of energy usage, seeking measurable opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint. When we have the chance to build a new facility, we make sure energy efficiency is built into the design from the start, ensuring long-term benefits.
3. Fleet Management & Optimization
With a large global fleet supporting laboratory service, repairs, and installations for all our customers, reducing fleet emissions has been a top priority. We’ve already made substantial progress by transitioning to electric and hybrid vehicles and optimizing logistics. Our fleet optimization efforts account for a third of our total emissions reduction so far.
Making a Real Impact
Our hard work is paying off. Over the past three years, we’ve reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 24%, eliminating 12,498 MTCo2. Thanks to our fleet restructuring, renewable energy investments, and efficiency improvements, we’re ahead of Danaher’s schedule in our emission reduction goals.
A Passion for Sustainability
“For us, sustainability is about securing a healthier future for everyone. To do that, we must run our operations efficiently and effectively every day. By embracing best practices, we not only strengthen our business but also create lasting benefits for the environment. I’m deeply passionate about this work because it perfectly aligns operational excellence with environmental stewardship.”
Gabriel Compton - Senior Director - Global EHS and Dx Platform Sustainability at Beckman Coulter Diagnostics
“Emission reduction is a constant effort. It’s not something you can achieve with a one-time fix; it’s a journey that requires daily commitment. It has to be integrated into how we operate our business - not as an afterthought, but as part of the core. Running a great business means being responsible for how we use energy, just like ensuring safety. It’s simply the right and best way to do things.”
Gabriel Compton - Senior Director - Global EHS and Dx Platform Sustainability at Beckman Coulter Diagnostics
“Knowing that the products we develop have a positive impact on people’s lives keeps me motivated. It’s exciting to work for a company that’s equally committed to sustainability. We may not have all the answers yet, but we’re exploring the best options and experimenting with new solutions. Our dedication to both innovation and environmental responsibility drives everything we do.”
Annie Christianson - Director of Sustainability, Danaher Diagnostics
“We’re tackling challenges we don’t have complete answers to yet, which means we’re constantly problem-solving and experimenting. That’s the spirit of Beckman Coulter - we’re innovators at heart, and sustainability is no different.”
