Beckman Coulter Volunteers: Making a Difference in Our Communities

At Beckman Coulter our employees take pride in supporting the communities in which they live and work. Hundreds of employees have dedicated countless hours toward raising money and awareness for nonprofit organizations and charities they believe in. From walking for the cure to biking for hope, Beckman Coulter Volunteers truly make a difference!

Beckman Coulter Volunteers were proud supporters of the following 2005-2006 events:

BREA/FULLERTON

MS 150 Bike Ride
Team Beckman Coulter had a strong presence at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s 150 Mile Bike Tour in Southern California on October 8 & 9. The team made a significant contribution to the event by raising nearly $60,000 with the company’s matching funds. The bike tour left Huntington Beach on Saturday morning and finished in San Diego on Sunday, October 9.


Light The Night

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk on September 10 was a huge success. Our team of 88 from Orange County raised over $15,000 (with company match). During this walk, the walkers carried illuminated balloons to celebrate the lives of those affected by cancer.

City of Hope Walk
On October 9, 59 walkers representing Beckman Coulter turned out in support of the City of Hope/Walk for Hope in Duarte, California. Including the company match, they collected over $4,968 which is used for breast cancer research. Since most individuals have been touched by breast cancer, our employee response to this event has always been very positive.

Relay for Life
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is an overnight event that unites our community in a common effort to raise funds for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. On August 12-13, 24 Beckman Coulter employees raised $2,400 which included company matching funds.

Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation Baskets
Over 150 Brea and Fullerton employees created and donated baskets for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation’s “Bid for the Kids’ event. 25 unique baskets were auctioned at the Foundation’s fundraising event.

Make a Difference Day
On October 22, as part of National Make a Difference Day, 27 Beckman Coulter employees, family and friends from Fullerton and Brea painted, constructed and landscaped the Orangethorpe Elementary school in Fullerton, California.


CARLSBAD/SAN DIEGO

Legoland Walk
Our team won the award for the largest team with more than 150 walkers and we raised $8,000, which included company matching funds, for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Legoland Walk in April. Funds raised from this event support programs for people with MS and support a nationwide research program to find the cause, treatment and cure for MS.

Clean the Beach
In 2005, over 35 Beckman Coulter employees volunteered for three Beach Clean Up Days. They worked with other volunteers to pick up trash and recyclables along beaches, waterways, canyons and streets. In total over 2,500 volunteers helped out at 41 cleanup sites! Those hard-working volunteers picked up an estimated 102,000 pounds of debris.

San Diego Food Bank

In September, 26 Beckman Coulter Volunteers packed 1,147 boxes (1.8 Tons) of food in three hours! Our employees raised over $2,700 in donations and collected over 131 lbs of food.



INDIANAPOLIS

Special Olympics Plane Pull

On August 31, 2005, a team of 20 from Beckman Coulter engaged in a tug-of-war with a FedEx Boeing 727. Teams raised funds to benefit Special Olympics Indiana and their sports competitions and training programs for nearly 12,000 Hoosiers with intellectual disabilities. Our Beckman Coulter team placed in the top 20 out of 43 teams with a time of 9.468 seconds, and raised $1,600, including company match.

Junior Achievement of Indiana Bowl-a-Thon
On October 15, 2005, a team of 20 participated in the Junior Achievement Bowl-a-thon. Teams raise funds to benefit Junior Achievement's Exchange City program which is a hands-on learning lab site experience for area 5th graders to give them practical experience in economic and entrepreneurial concepts. Our team raised $7,145, which included corporate sponsorship and matching funds.

In addition to the above fundraisers we also participated in the following in 2005:

  • Six employees volunteered for a day as mentors/coaches at the Indianapolis Junior Achievement Exchange City in May 2005
  • Donated over 1100 school supplies to the Indianapolis United Way Back Pack Attack initiative in July 2005
  • 19 employees donated 148 man hours to deliver Meals on Wheels to shut-ins and the elderly in the Indianapolis area

PORTERVILLE, CA

Highway Committee
Beckman Coulter employees spent two days per month cleaning our assigned part of Hwy 65 in Porterville. There are approximately 20 employee's who met the third Thursday evening, and the third Saturday of each month to pick up trash and debris that has accumulated along our part of the highway. We take great pride in our city and this is what we do to help.


Relay For Life

Beckman Coulter employees have fund raisers all year long for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The grand finale is in October of each year with the actual "Relay" where we spend the night and walk around the clock for cancer. Our team of 67 volunteer's raised $21,240.57 for 2005 with company match.
 


MIAMI

Juvenile Diabetes Walkathon
On March 12, 2005, the annual Cure Diabetes Walkathon was held at the Miami Metro Zoo to benefit research for the South Florida Juvenile Diabetes Association. Beckman Coulter was among four thousand Metro-Dade residents who walked and raised money to show their support for curing this debilitating disease.


March of Dimes Walkathon

In April, a total of 88 volunteers from our Miami facility walked at Peacock Park, Coconut Grove raising over $7,335.00 with company match for the March of Dimes.

American Heart Walk
In September, Beckman Coulter employees from Miami braved the heat and humidity to take part in Miami’s American Heart Association Heart Walk. The team raised $6,415.00 with the company’s match to help in the fight against heart disease.

Breast Cancer Walk
Close to 100 volunteers from Beckman Coulter participated in the Cancer Charities Foundation Breast Cancer Walk – Walking Today for Tomorrow’s Breast Cancer Cure in America on October 2. They raised an impressive $10,330.00 with company match.
